"The Commitments" is a loud, comic extravaganza about aband from the poorest slums of North Dublin that decides to playsoul music for the working people of Dublin. The organizer ofthe band and who I feel is the most important character is themanager Jimmy Rabbitte. Jimmy is a young man who knows musicand knows what's cool, who has the business mind to bring in newmusicians and the potential to make the band a success. Jimmyintroduces the band to soul music. The band likes soul music,but they don't particularly identify with it. Jimmy's logic ispersuasive: "The Irish are the blacks of Europe. Dubliners arethe blacks of Ireland. North Dubliners are the blacks of Jimmy Rabbit is the band's manager, and perhaps one of themost complex characters. At first, it seems he believes the bandis just another moneymaking scheme. When things started comingtogether in the group's performances, I believe he started tosee The Commitments as his way to fame. He would hold imaginaryinterviews with himself, and give the reporters deeply feltresponses when actually interviewed. He had spent some yearsreceiving unemployment benefits, and I think that he wantedmore, which where the band fit into his plan
He has good management skills, isconsistently able to get gigs for the group, and he has anability to promote. Joey isanother character with some depth to him. The members become jealous of Joey the Lipsfor making out with Imelda. Imelda'srole is also significant in a way that Jimmy feels she is onemain reason the commitments stay together. Theidea of sex and politics is a theme that played a major roleamong the band throughout the book. He even goes as far as saying, "This ismy band," which none of the others take too lightly. As manager, he forms the theme of the band,which is "sex and politics for the working people of Dublin. For themost part, he is shown as an egotistical jerk. Throughout the book and movie, Jimmy forms some type ofrelationship with all the members of the band. The music is an integral partof the movie. I think it is hilarious that Joeythe Lips is so much older than all the other male members of thegroup and he is the one that ends up getting Imelda. Through this I believe he helped eachmember identify themselves more honestly. After Jimmy had spoken with Joeythe Lips at the back gate, his father asked, "What did he want?"Jimmy replied with the answer he had been given, "God sent him. The other solereason the commitments stayed together as long as they did isbecause of Jimmy. If anythingthe reason they sounded like an actual band is because of him I feel Jimmy's strongest ability is forming the members ofthe band and creating a strong foundation for them.
