Patriotism

             " A man's country is not a certain area of land, mountains, rivers, and woods but it is a principle, and patriotism is loyalty to that principle." I believe this quote from George William Curtis couldn't define patriotism any better. It gives me a great sense of pride knowing I am loyal to that principal, my country. Without patriotism, America wouldn't have achieved what it has today. Many nations don't understand the components of patriotism.
             A big part of patriotism is helping others in your country. The United States showed this patriotism after the occurrences of September 11, 2001. Hundreds of people lined up to give blood for the injured. In our school, the National Honor Society sponsored a community blood drive. I volunteered to be a part of this worthwhile project. Others donated food or gave out money in support. The country rallied as one in order to aid these hurt people.
             Another major element of patriotism is the willingness to fight or even die for a cause. Many American men and woman have perished to keep the ideals of America alive. During the American Revolution Henry R. Lee fought the battle of words. He believed in American freedom. He presented a resolution to the Continental Congress on June 7, 1776. His resolution stated "that these colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be totally dissolved." Lee fought hard to persuade colonists to accept his ideas. Finally on July 1, 1776, 12 of the 13 colonies accepted the resolution for independence.
             A further aspect of patriotism is showing respect to your nation's flag. The flag of the United States is far more than the colors of cloth from which it is made. As a living symbol of our country, it stand...
