Caesar Agustus Impact On Rome
Augustus was born on the 23rd of September in 63 B.C. and died on the 19th of August 14 A.D. Throughout the course of his eighty-two years, Caesar Augustus was responsible for many great accomplishments, not the least of which was the recreation of the Republic of Rome. In true Caesarian style, Augustus displayed the Record of His Accomplishments throughout the empire. In the time following the Second Triumvirate, Augustus possessed every high office that he would allow the Senate to bestow upon him. He was Consul, triumver, princeps senatus, pontifex maximus and was offered the role of dictator, which he refused on multiple occasions. He was the man who rebuilt Rome's political structure as well as its' physical monuments. The Senate house and the Capitol owe their restoration to Caesar Augustus as do many temples including that of Mars the Avenger. He constructed the temple in memory of his defeat of his father's murders. The borders of the Roman world were expanded without the need for war, rather by peaceful alliance with the people of lands neighboring the state. Still, the most important accomplishments of Augustus were a result of his political reformation not expansion, colonization or physical reconstruction.
It would have been a formative task even for the great Pericles to rule over such an empire, but it was laughable to think that Gaius who "spent his formative years with the embittered old Tiberius. There was a quasi-peace throughout the land, under the Principate, that was rarely broken, except by small border skirmishes. The financial state of the Principate was somewhat desperate when compared to the late Republic. As the sole survivor of the Second Triumvirate, Augustus was in a position to be Emperor, but instead he relinquished his power to the Senate. Augustus created a state that only he could hold together. His government, called the Principate, returned power to the senate that had been stripped by the generals of pre-Caesarian Rome. Putting all of the Roman armies under the control of one general essentially nullified the chances of civil war that had been plaguing the Roman world since Marius' reforms. Additionally, the political conflict between the Senatorial and equestrian classes, that had become characteristic of Rome, was destroyed by the inclusion of the equestrians among the landed as they became involved in the government. Consequently, when Gaius ascended to power at the age of twenty-four, he was a vicious tyrant. Absolute power corrupted Gaius to the extent that he believed himself to be a god. So, despite the lessened monetary success of the 'empire', there was a decreased demand on the common taxpayer because Augustus was prosperous enough to offset the losses of Rome as a whole.
