The Story of the Hurricane

"That which does not kill us, makes us stronger." This is often used as a crutch for the downtrodden, but Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter is living proof of its truths (Fruitman 3). The story of Rubin Carter is an amazing one. It has many different parts to it, and also has very many controversial issues. A black kid growing up in an all white town would be a tough way to live. Growing up Rubin did not have a very good reputation with the authorities around Patterson. At the age of 14 he was sent to a Jamesburg Detention Center for Boys for convictions of assault. In 1954, he escaped and enlisted in the U.S. Army (espn.go.com). After he left the Army he resumed his troublesome life. In 1957 he was convicted for his part in two robberies. After the four years in jail, and the time he spent in the Army he began his boxing career. Rubin was born on May 6, 1937, in Clifton, New Jersey. He was raised near by, in a small town called Patterson. Rubin was the youngest of four boys and three girls. He got into trouble a lot from running with the wrong crowd (espn.go.com). As a child Rubin was not the best kid anyone could ask for, he was frequently in trouble with the law, but he said, "I wasn't dumb, just hard to control." Rubin was charg


It was very obvious that he was innocent from the beginning. He could have been the champion of the world, but right before the deciding fight he was framed for a murder. All ages should know that no matter what you have to face, you should never give up. While in amateur boxing he knocked out thirty-six opponents before he finally made his professional debut. At the hospital they were brought to the only surviving man in the bar at the time of the shootings. There was no reason for him to kill anyone. If it were not for the heart of Rubin Carter, he may still be in jail today. Even after that Carter and Artis had to take lie detector tests.
