Mark Moris Dance Concert
" There is no more musical, inventive, volatile or entertaining dance maker currently afoot......... Morris alone is infusing American modern dance with the freshness that may rescue it from a weary formula and resuscitate it for a younger generation."--- Allan Ulrich, San Francisco Examiner. The Mark Morris concert is one of the most memorable concerts that I have been too. It was an unforgettable experience. Modern Dance has now come to be greatly appreciated all round the world. Mark Morris is considered as the soul of modern dancing. He was born on August 29th 1956 in Seattle Washington. During his appraisal he worked with many reputed dance companies which included Hannah Kahn Dance Company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians and various others. In 1980 he founded the Mark Morris Dance Group. On the15th and 16th of February 2002 the Mark Morris Dance Group came to perform at the George Mason University. It was very surprising to see that the hall was filled to its capacity. It was interesting to see that there are so many people who attend, appreciate and encourage performers such as these. This performance was sponsored by the Phillip Morris Companies Inc. Mark Morris was the artistic director, Barry
This piece also had music that was sung by the orchestra the only difference being that it was in English. On the whole the concert was a unique combination of dancing and conveying a message to the audience. The third piece "Peccadillos" was performed and directed by the man himself "Mark Morris". This piece included songs such as "You were meant for me" which depicted emotion and even the dancers were able to show emotion clearly thus making the audience believe it was reality, and the song "And her mother came too" which depicted comedy and made the audience laugh in abundance. As said by Jann Parry (The Observer {UK}) Mark Morris's dancers induce a state of bliss that can be enjoyed by everyone. Another aspect of this concert that I noticed and thought was unique was the background changed color according to the mood of the song adding effects to the piece. The first item was "I don't want to love"; this sequence was very subtle and pleasant. The color chosen was yellow thus describing all the emotions in one color. Mark Morris is an amazing dancer and manages to grab the attention of the audience with his performances. The music for this piece was unique and performed by one man -Ethan Iverson. This piece was an entertainment packed one. It was amazing to see how well the orchestra, the singer and the dancers were coordinated. It included drama, comedy, emotion and also anger.
