New Galaxy
By utilizing various stylistic elements that evoke feelings in people, Alma Thomas creates an aesthetic painting that is not only pleasing to the eye, but also to the soul. The painting, cleverly named, New Galaxy, was done in 1970 with acrylic paint. Thomas painted New Galaxy on a 54 x 54 inch canvas. Through the use of a monochromatic blue color scheme, vertical lines, and impressionistic brush strokes, Alma Thomas conveys feelings of calmness, strength and renewal in her painting New Galaxy. The first element that caught my eye when I came across the painting was the mostly monochromatic color of the painting. Although a very small portion of the left side of the painting is painted with light pinks and whites, the vast majority of New Galaxy is painted in about three different blues. After contemplating the title of the painting, I figured that the artist used the small light pink and white part of the painting to represent the old part of an ancient galaxy. The bright blue portion of the painting represents calmness and con
I quickly learned that by analyzing it's formal elements, New Galaxy shows the transition from old to new with the small change in color and numerous impressionistic brush strokes. Alma uses impressionistic brush strokes to show that her painting represents renewal and uniqueness through a New Galaxy. The lines are carefully placed very close together, both side-by-side and on top of one another. I never thought I could analyze a piece of art this thoroughly, but I enjoyed the experience. The painting quickly caught my eye with it's bright blue monochromatic color scheme, vertical line organization, and impressionistic style. The way she actually paints the painting using this technique yielded a lot of time and effort. You can sense that Alma decides to use impressionism to communicate that New Galaxy is fresh, unique, and exclusive in comparison with it's counterparts, or in this case, with other paintings. Alma Thomas uses the formal elements of color, line, and brush stroke to convey feelings of calmness, strength, and renewal to guarantee that New Galaxy will be successful, powerful, and unique. With the use of small vertical lines, Thomas creates a "brick wall" that represents a strong new galaxy that cannot be ruined by anything. Alma could've easily decided to use a number of different styles when she was creating the painting; however, the overall aesthetic quality of the painting would've been different. The painting itself is expressed in a number of tiny vertical lines. In conclusion, Alma Thomas' New Galaxy is a painting that brings about many different feelings in its admirers. Without each other, the lines or "bricks" would not be strong on their own; together, however, they represent the strength and stability of a concrete brick wall. I think that the name of the painting fits precisely after absorbing its elements for a few minutes. The calm and soothing characteristics of water are clearly presented with Thomas' use of a monochromatic blue color scheme in her painting.
