Comparing Leo Buscaglia
The central focus of this comparative analysis paper will be on three different authors. While all three of these authors are different in their perceptions and ideas they are also very much alike in many ways. The authors that I'm referring to are Jose Ortega Y Gasset, Martin Buber, and Leo Buscaglia. The unique way in which all three of these authors are tied together is through there love of dialogical communication. Each author with a different approach in dialogical communication also has different views of the world and its people. To completely analyze and compare these three authors, I feel that I must first shed some light on each author as a person and there views in the study of communication. Jose Ortega Y Gasset, whom I will refer to as "Ortega", was born in 1883 in Madrid, Spain. Out of all three authors, Ortega is probably the foremost leader in the art and study of philosophy. I also feel that he is the most misunderstood of the three. His writings take a discipline from the reader that is unmatched. This discipline that is needed from the reader is one that requires an absolute open mind and unbiased approach. Martin Buber, born in 1878 in what is now known as the Soviet Union was also a scholar in
Buber states that there is a difference between "social relationships and interhuman relationships. In this way both authors want to show what constitutes being human. Being on the other hand involves showing to others who we really are. A large part of being human according to Buber is through what he calls being and seeming. Buber believes that each of us lives two separate lives, what he describes as the "two folds" One fold is made up of our interaction with objects, and the other fold occurs when we become fully human persons in genuine relationships with others (Buber, pg. Buber's main focus of study was on the subject of the "interhuman". He believes that between two men in a relationship, each person must become aware of the other and not just use them as an object (Buber, pg. Ortega believes that people get caught up in what is called alteracion, which is simply doing things without knowing why we are doing them. To connect this to a relationship format, he would say we need to connect to the other person on a higher level. Although each author has a different take on this subject, all three men are concerned with the human aspects of life and what constitutes being human. We should step out of our shells and really connect to the other person otherwise we are just in a state of alteracion. He states that seeming is just the act we put on; it is our face with which we appear to others. To relate this to Leo Buscaglia, one could say that he too believes that a person needs to acknowledge the "other" person or people in our lives.
