Music That Causes More Harm Than Good
Music That Causes More Harm Than Good Are you a member of the mass who asks, "How can modern music these days be so upsetting and disturbing? The answer is simple-the artists that "sing" these disgusting lyrics are completely rude and obnoxious. There are so many varieties of music that make us feel good and encourage us to do the right things, but there is a darker side of music that brings out the malicious side of listeners, listeners to the music that is being blasted into our children's ears. The children of America's role models are "singing" and rapping about drugs, prostitutes, and violence that would blow most of us non-listeners away. From the screaming men yelling obscenities to the rappers rapping about gangs and drugs, our children are listening and learning that the actions that these demeaning lyrics express are acceptable behaviors. The music of today has changed for the worse and is suggesting to America's youth that they commit acts of violence, speak obscenities, and use drugs, and reinforcing these behaviors through continued listening, platinum record after platinum record. Foremost is the fact of the increasing number of violent crimes in America. That is murder, rape, gang fights, and any othe
" If parents can't stop their kids from listening to unnecessary music then our government needs to do something about it. The point is that music affects our youth. But these acts of violence have been coming forth in today's heavy metal and hip-hop lyrics. As true for a lot of teenagers today, music is a release and is very powerful to them. Having those lyrics being put into your head every time you hear them just makes our youth want to do those drugs. And to think that our youth are listening these stories of violent acts is just unimaginable. ''Understanding the nature and extent of the influence of music violence may well be the first step for ensuring a more civil society (Nina Crowley, ''Senate Hearings on Music, Newsgroup at page 2, November 15, 1997). Today's youth looks up to these artists. They listen to the cd hearing all of the obscenities the artist is yelling and don't really think much of it. If this were true, then why would 59% of substance abusers name heavy metal as their favorite type of music? (Javier Martin, ''Separating Fact from Fiction: Rock Music and Violence'' November 28, 1997, page 2). They would help prevent children from learning violent acts through examples, and keep people from being offended by foul language. As a final point, music can change the way our youth speak and act. Usually we only hear about this stuff on the five o'clock news or special news broadcasts. They see someone that is listened to by millions of people and automatically think that the artist they see is cool. The majority of youth is heavily influenced by music, and needs to be protected from the harm of obscene artists.
