The ratio in America between homosexual and heterosexual people has grown emessly since the late 1970's. The ratio used to be 2 out of every 20 people its, now 7 out of every 20 people. Gays in America have been miss treated for along time until they had there own rights pass and put together organizations together to protect each other. For along time gays were not allowed in the military, and if there were accepted they would have to hide there sexuality. One organization named the Alliance that was put together to protect gay rights. This organization is a nation wide, nonpartisan organization formed to promote and secure full civil rights for Lesbians, Gay men and Bisexual and Transgender women and men in the United States. There goal are to strengthen and unite the gay community through participation in Americas political process and to increase awareness about Gay issues amongst the general public, politicians, and the media. In 1995, the sexual orientation civil rights law was by the Rhode Island legislature and signed into law by Gov. Lincoln Almond. This capped an eleven year struggle to pass law. This ruling says that the military is exempt from the rules of the rest society has to follow. In April of last year the pentagon released statistics showing that it had discharged 997 gays in '97, a 67% increase since the implementation of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the highest number of discharges since '89. The Romer case overturned Colorado's Amendment 2, a Colorado ballot measure that would have denied localities the ability to enact orordinaces that barred anti-gay discrimination. Through out the course of writing this essay I have learn and feel strongly the that gays and lesbians have been treated very unfairly in the past and are still are being treated unfair. In addition, an anti- gay Defense of Marriage Act failed on the Louisiana Senate floor this month. If the bill had become law, it would have prohibited the state from recognizing civil unions or domestic partnership formed in other states. Unfortunately, the republican- controlled house voted to prevent the governor from offering such benefits. In Texas, the Senate Criminal Justice committee approved a bill that stiffens penalties for hate crimes. The state Senate voted 22-3 in favor of the legislation.
