New England Generation

The Great Migration offered religious freedom to the Puritans and an economic enhancement to the English settlers. Due to such prospects, New England was considered to be a land of opportunity for newcomers who have always desired of the dreamland. During seventeenth century, there was a great abruption in population and expansion of corrupted religions in England. In order to purify the corrupted Church of England, the Puritans were seeking after a new opportunity for religious freedom. They believed that New England was God's answer for them to serve the Lord, free from corruption. Their Puritan beliefs were the main motivation for the emigrants to abandon their homeland. Convincing themselves to be separated from their relatives and taking a life-risking journey could not have been ordinary. This shows that the Puritans were content with achieving competency. Such shows the success of New England as a land of opportunity. On the contrary to the result, the settlers' goal was not for financial gain. While the spiritual goals played the essential parts for the emigrants to come to New England, economic elements were also of concern. Such benefits gave the new land an advantage over England. Such attitude among the settlers, accomplished a stable society in seventeenth century. (Pg190, Anderson) Many sacrificed their wealth in order to start a new life in New England. In terms of economic welfare, New England eventually became a land of opportunity for everyone except for widows and orphans. ± (Pg10, Anderson), dependent on the size of the family, also the order of arrival to the new land. They expanded their family and developed their community in order to create a much more stable society. They did not have to worry about the persecution for the personal meetings they held amongst themselves. New England provided the settlers with a great deal of land, which allowed them to succeed whereas economic improvements were not possible to obtain in their home country. Fulfilling everyone's desired purpose, the colony truly was a land of opportunity. Since there was no government to regulate their spiritual life and no pre-existing social pattern to follow, the Puritans could practice their religion the way they wanted to.
