The Emotion of Poetry

Poetry is written words which express meaning and bring life to those words. Emily Dickinson is simply stating that poetry is something the reader has to feel, without any feeling for the issue at hand, one can not truly understand poetry. If you do not have similar emotions as the writer, you can not understand what message the writer is trying to convey to you. Through the complicated twists of literal and figurative meanings a poems true beauty can be explored through feelings. "Hidden Meanings", speaks of hatred towards ones mother in the first line. The first line draws the reader into the poem. As a reader, one wonders why fairy tale characters hate their mothers. There is however an underlying meaning that has to be explored. As a reader one is drawn into the lives of Hansel and Jack and can relate to the frustration one can have with authority figures. Life in reality, as well as in the poem, is a magical journey entered into by everyone. You never know what will happen during the course of your life. It is the unknown that makes life so magical. Dickinson's quote exemplifies the passion a writer can put into a poem and Stuart backs up her claim. Fairy tales are supposed to be sweet, nice, and have a moral but i

Each writer has their own unique way of helping others to understand what poetry is saying. "Against Love," is a perfect example of how after going through the torture and pain love can cause, one just would rather mingle with others then commit. This poem relates to Dickinson's in the way that love can be hurtful and make someone cold and not willing to warm up or trust anyone again. Dickinson describes the scene of a neighbor looking into a house and placing facts together to arrive at the conclusion someone has died but the writer never actually mentions a body ever coming out of the house. Poems are messages, stories, and life lessons that can be used or just forgotten. In "There's been a Death," as a reader, one craves more knowledge of the situation and small observations turn into large details that one might over-analyze. This poem evokes the feelings of the neighbors through the senses. In order to understand a poem one must have the same or similar feelings as the writer. A good poem is one that evokes your feelings and stays with you for all of time. Love is like a constant pain that people take pleasure in reliving experience after experience and the writer is mocking people for why they can be pleased with love. This poem is a lesson in life, the writer is trying to protect people from falling in love and telling others about the harm it can do. Dickinson explains the view so well that as a reader you can picture yourself sitting in that window wondering what is going on. A poem just needs to be understood and in life one day, what has been learned could lend a hand in the future. A writer like Philips can help to explain some of life's hardships but it is up to the reader to understand and set their own future.
