Jarrel
Randall Jarrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1914. Jarrell earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Vanderbilt University. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, but soon left the Air Corps for the army experience, which provided much material for his poetry. Some people might interpret their readings differently as to what the author of this writing was really trying to express when he wrote it. Knowing very little about the author, other than his name, I had a completely different interpretation of what Jarrells poem "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" meant. Having no background information on Jarrell and his views when he wrote that poem, my interpretation of that same poem, my interpretation of that same poem was based on my ideas and on what I understood of it by viewing it through my eyes. The first time I read the poem, I thought about a baby inside the woman and when it is that the fetus is actually considered a form of life. Many people disagree on which period of time the fetus actually becomes someone with life. Some people believe that the baby has life since it starts forming in the woman's body. Since the baby is not in good health, those six months would never pass by, and the hope of living outside the mom's body is soon gone. "A person was crunched inside the ball turret for hours during the flight, and when there was fighting he moved the ball turret and kept shooting"(Maurice). e a woman's body to have life until it is born and can breath the oxygen outside like the rest of us. The second line "And I hunched in it's belly till my wet fur froze"(2635), means that the formation of the baby started to lose its shape as well as its signs of life. It means that the loss of the baby was not taken so seriously. The relation between the poem and Jarrell is that he is expressing his feelings on how he was seeing things when he was in the army. "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" is a very simple poem about the horror of being a ball-turret gunner. The hose was not a regular hose, "The hose was a steam hose"(Maurice). All the dreams of the baby to finally get into this world are gone, and there is no other chance for it. "And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze"(2635); means that he revolved within the turret hunched upside-down in his little sphere. The fourth line, "I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters"(2635), means that the beautiful dream of becoming someone was gone and soon became a nightmare in which the nightmare fighters were there to tell him/her goodbye for good. That the mom didn't know that something was beginning to go wrong with the baby. The last sentence in the poem, "when I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose"(2635), means that the nightmare fighters were there to wash him away as something forgotten from the past without importance to anyone. Reading the last sentence in the poem, "When they washed me of the turret with a hose," eliminates the chances of me even thinking about joining the army during war time. In order to understand the poem, you need to know some background.
