Our Town

             The play Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder was set in the town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire at the turn of the century. In some ways, the time and setting don't really matter, because this play has a universal theme with messages that can reach people of just about any time period. There are also things that have changed drastically today since the time when this play took place.
             In the early 1900s, soon after students graduated from high school, they immediately were married. In fact, just about everyone in Grover's Corners was soon married. In today's society, the majority of people that finish high school, either go on to college, or go out into the world to get a job before they settle down and start a family. Also, just about everyone in the town attends church and everyone knows when you are there and when you aren't. In great contrast to then, today the majority of people do not attend church. People usually don't even pay attention to whether or not you were in church or not in today's society.
             In Grover's Corners, Simon Stimson was walking down the street when he was drunk and Constable Warren "looked the other way." While if a police officer saw a man arbitrarily walking down the street drunk today, he certainly would not "look the other way." Cars were being introduced for the first time during this time period and it was very rare to have a car. Today average income families have up to two cars.
             Before the engagement between George and Emily happened, Emily spoke of how her father, as well as George's father was "perfect." By this, she meant that both of the men knew how to treat their wives and their children. She had a great deal of respect for her parents, just as all of the children of that time did.
