Sir Gawin and the Green Knight
The strict value systems of the early fourteenth century can be seen through the manyfamous and traditional pieces of literature written by known and also unknown, mysterious authors of this time. Through these works, it is noticeable that specific characteristics such as religious faith, trust and confidence must be distinct in a person in order for them to be considered a noble and honorable man or woman. The poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an author unknown, demonstrates that although a person may hold many great characteristics that are highly recognized as perfect, they are human and able to make mistakes. Throughout the beginning pieces of the poem, Sir Gawain's perfection as a honorableknight, friend and follower of god is seen. Through his many actions of being honest and trueto himself and his values of life, the reader is forced upon a false opinion of his character (Clein,3). There are many incidences in parts one and two of the poem that give readers an unrealistic opinion of Sir Gawain which make him seem unhuman. He is expected to be flawless of mistakes and is even related to "a precious pearl" (Gawain, 206). As the
" (Gawain,170) Sir Gawain is going to be faithful to his promise that he made one year prior to the day which will lead to having his head cut off. His role as a high great knight is shown through the description of the feastheld at King Arthur's court. The lady of the house tests his knightly virtues of chastity and courtesy. He is displayed to be more human-like, and ability to make mistakes are seen by the readers. "Talking before the high table of triffles fair There Gawain theknight by Genevere sits. This challenge is a test of bravery, honesty and integrity. In part one and two of the poem the reader is presented to the opinion that Sir Gawain is a perfect man. "The guide tempts Gawain to flee from the Green Knight's domain and offers to perjure himself in Gawain's defense" ( White, Jr. In part one of the poem the two main characters are introduced, along with the roles they play. In the end, Sir Gawain's character portrays the characteristics of a human man.
