Slavery
Slavery has appeared almost universally throughout history among peoples of every level of material culture; from Ancient Rome to the United States in the 19th century, however, in no other culture had slavery been exclusively associated with one race as was the case with black Africans in America. Slavery can be defined as 'the involuntary servitude of one person to another or one group to another' (Cresset Press, 1996, 'The Complete Encyclopaedia'), and in effect divided the union of America during the C18th and C19th. During this time, the 'Americans' in the Southern States had adopted a predominantly pro-slavery stance whereas the 'Americans' in the North had become anti-slavery, putting them directly at odds. Slavery appeared not only as a moral issue, but also affected the nation on an economic, social and legal level. Arguably, the abolition of slavery was the discerning issue of the Civil War (1861-65), but also it adversely altered the relations of the peoples of the United States of America. The numerous economic issues associated with slavery which compromised union integrity were the Southerners' debt due to the purchase of slaves from the North, the inability of the South to develop industry because of the aforementio
Slavery violated basic human ethics on a social, moral and legal basis, and to an extent caused economic issues in the South. This mounting pressure from the North only intensified the pre-existing contempt of the North by the South, and jeopardised the relationship between Americans at the time. Tubman herself was an escaped slave who risked her life and freedom in the aid of others. Morally, slavery was justified by the Southern States in terms of biblical references and political speeches, and bringing the aptitude of the blacks for self-determination into question. 130) As dramatic as these statements are the true medium that changed the North's perception of slavery was the release of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852, which has been labelled by historians as 'a sentimental propaganda war against slavery'. However, historiography, it will be remembered that slavery, regardless of blame, had a grossly negative and detrimental impact on the relations between Americans during C18th . Calhoun's words, [is] 'a positive' good. (Coaldrake and Meaney, 1976, pg 26) This event highlighted the difference in opinions about slavery held in the North and South, and furthermore helped to break down civil relations.
