Euthanasia

             Why shouldn't we legalize assisted suicide? Advocates of euthanasia also known as "mercy-killing" is a necessary treatment for patients, especially for those that are terminally ill, and are experiencing excruciating pain. Proponents of euthanasia recommend that the only way to eliminate the pain is to eliminate the patient. They are bidding for a legal acknowledgement of a "right to suicide" and "physician-assisted suicide". They also believe that society should respect and yield to the freedom of choice of suicide because people of unendurable suffering should have the right to end his life. Adversaries say that it is against the first amendment and there are much better ways to overcome this than euthanasia.
             If society accepts a "a right to suicide", we would be reversing the many years of experience and studies that show suicide is the appropriate end for suffering, rather than an actual cry for help. This would also go against the Fifth Amendment, which protects the right to a life. An attempt at suicide, psychologists say is actually a test for significant ones, and the world, to see if there is anyone out there that actually cares. Statistics have shown that few of those rescued from suicide attempts try again. The actual event of their rescue honored the individual true wishes and respected that person's being.
             Many studies show that the majority of those that commit suicide or attempt suicide have mental problems. Studies suggest that 94% of those committing suicide suffer from some diagnosable mental disorder such as schizophrenic panic disorders, depression, or alcoholism. All of these disorders leading to suicide are indeed treatable.
             But what about those terminally ill patients? Some believe that a decision to die, especially for those with unendurable suffering, is a natural right. This belief is wrong. One never had the chance to make the decision to live in the beginning. The terminally ill pat...
