Why Ss There a War Against Pesticides?
Why is there a war against pesticides?Pesticides have been used for years in the agricultural industry as well as in parks, lawns, gardens and school yards. Pesticides have many harmful effects on our environment, as well as on our children's health. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that municipalities have the right to ban the use of agricultural pesticides. Banning the use of agricultural pesticides in Canada is ineffective for many reasons.Pesticides work by physically, chemically, or biologically interfering with a pest's behavior. Numerous studies indicate that many of the pesticides registered for use in this country can have harmful effects on living things other than those they are designed to kill. Pesticides can damage and kill living organisms and they are routinely used by agricultural farmers to control pests that can destroy crops. Pesticides unfortunately are also being found in foods across the country. The toxins are being ingested by humans in the form of fruits and vegetables that still have residual toxins on them. The health hazards of pesticides are now being recognized. Some farmers that have used pesticides in their fields have developed leukemia and research has found that the c
This will certainly help reduce the chance exposure to pesticides when children are playing on soccer fields or playgrounds. As naturally, clean drinking water starts with a clean water source, the best way to ensure safe drinking water is by reducing or eliminating pesticides so that they cannot contaminate our water. Applying chemicals such as pesticides is a leading cause of water pollution today. "Every year, Canadians' quest for a greener lawn, accounts for nearly 60 percent of non-agricultural pesticide use" (Pesticides 7). Wildlife is often exposed to chemicals via their food and in their habitats. Animals are even more vulnerable to the toxins found in pesticides. However, banning harmful agricultural chemicals won't be effective, if crops in other countries are grown with the same harmful chemicals, and then are allowed to be imported. A multitude of pesticides are sprayed on Canada's lawns, playgrounds, parks and golf courses for cosmetic reasons. Such problems can include: cancer, reproductive disorders, and immunological disorders. Society knows that fruits, vegetables, and grains are very important to maintain a balanced diet. Drinking water can become contaminated or polluted due to a number of factors, not all of them related to pesticide use. As time continues, the amounts of chemicals that are being found in our water are increasing. If society is going to stop the escalation of the use of pesticides, then alternative solutions must be explored and put into effect. Most of these chemicals have never been tested for the long-term effects that they may have on humans and a large proportion of these chemicals have only been used in the last 50 years. The use of pesticides has left evidence that indicates even dogs are suffering from their exposure.
