Walker Brothers Cowboy
The narrator of the story has a strained relationship with her mother. On the first page, the dress fitting is an allegory describing their relationship. "We leave my mother...itching from the hot wool."(Pg.1) The narrator feels that the clothes are just like her mother as they are uncomfortable. When the narrator and her mother make a simple trip to the store, the mother irritates the narrator even more by making her dress up beyond the social ranking that she has. Her mother "wears a good dress, navy blue...on the back steps."(Pg.5) This annoys the narrator because they are dressed much fancier compared with the other
4) Nora's dress also parallels her with the narrator's mother. 5) "We have not walked past two houses before I feel we have become objects of universal ridicule. However, when at Nora's, her father drinks whiskey with her. 12) It is also sleeveless, something the narrator's mother would never wear. 16) After only knowing Nora for a short while, the narrator feels proud; something she hasn't felt around her mother. Nora also brings out a different side of her father. Her mother's seemingly constant attempts to remember what the family once was annoy the narrator. Even the dirty words chalked on the sidewalk are laughing at us. He tells his story about the incident earlier and sings his songs. In the short time she knows Nora, the narrator grows to like her more than her mother. Nora seems to bring out a new personality in the narrator and her father. These examples showcase the estranged relationship between the narrator and her mother. Before going to Nora's, the narrator thought that her father never drank.
