Grave danger

"The gravest danger facing America and the World today is outlaw regimes that seek and possess nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons." This line from Presidents Bush's 2003 State of the Union Address underlines what is in store for our nation. The risk to our country is increasing more and more due to the availability of cheap weapons and military technology. There are a couple of factors that contribute to the rise in our national security risk. The first and most obvious threat comes in the form of terrorism from armed minorities, for example militant Islamic groups. Defending a nation from terrorist attacks is tricky, because of the fluidity of the group. It's not like dealing with a country, these terrorists live within civilization that may not know of their existence. Another security risk are unstable regimes or aggressive states that are rising to power. These countries are potentially dangerous because of irrational rulers, or strong senses of nationalism. These nation states can hurt us in a couple of ways. One way, is by supporting terrorists and other militant groups with guns and money. Another way a country could be a danger to the US is through a cold war style face off Whatever the case, these problems

As a result of our dependency, the Middle East is a big interest of ours, and we must do whatever it takes to protect our interests. They don't have the political or military clout to get there point across, so terrorism is their only way to do so. Palestine came under a new Jewish rule and became what it is now known as Israel. Sinocentrism is a common belief, a belief held by the Chinese. It is doubtful that North Korea would launch a nuclear weapon on any country, because the result in return would be disastrous for them. Whether that is through military coercion or economic sanctions. Most dictators concerned with staying in power, so by letting terrorists take care of the dirty work they limit the risk for his nation. They must be dealt with quickly before they get too out of hand. North Korea is a country where this is a possible scenario. The US cannot sit idle on these issues. Taiwan is still a sore spot to this day, and with the Chinese slowly retaking their former territories, I would imagine an attempt to take Taiwan back is in the near future. (Rourke 348) The train bombings in Madrid last month is a great example of how effective terrorism can be. As long as the United States is in the Middle East, there will be an increased terror threat. The United States must find an alternate fuel source.
