The American Pit Bull Terrier

"The American Pit Bull Terrier may well be a vanishing breed. Today, this loyal, courageous breed is facing a hostile media, an unforgiving court system, and potentially, its own death" (Palika 4). Liz Palika also states that "fighting traits have made the breed a favorite among people who encourage aggression in their dogs. This encouragement along with a lack of good training, poor socialization, and ignorant breeding practices have caused numerous disasters with Pit Bulls as central players" (4). Joe Stahlkuppe adds that a few American Pit Bull Terriers are uncontrollable and risky, the same as a few canines of other pedigrees are uncontrollable or risky (7). To say that the vast majority of American Pit Bull Terriers are out of control is certainly not true. There are many different factors that contribute to the bad reputation of the American Pit Bull Terrier; there are also many good qualities about this breed. Ian Dunbar finds that historians have found evidence that draws APBTs back to early Greece (i). Fenstermacher adds that "writings that date back to the early 1100s speak of contests where bulls and bears were baited by dogs" (6). He also states that bull baiting was a sport i

Michael Bosc comments that over 50 neighborhoods have forbidden or limited the Pit Bull, and many additional are taking into account new laws. O'Neil states that the Pit Bull is a canine that likes to satisfy its masters needs (viii). "It confidently undertakes the roles of natural guard in the home, competitive weight puller, show dog, agility dog, obedience competitor and childrens companion and protector" (O'Neil 26). "Dog Fighters have kept alive the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier as a savage killer. O'Neil confirms that these canines, at this time assorted with Rottweilers, a range of Shepherds and additional nasty dogs, are not anymore American Pit Bull Terriers than baby dogs from a Golden Retriever / Poodle intersect are still Golden Retrievers (22). It also is caused by those who deliberately breed, train and raise dogs to fight. O'Neil states that "most Pit Bull puppies grow up to become a reflection of both their owners' personality and the care and training they receive" (viii). Julia Szabo adds that following rapper DMX, also know as Earl Simmons, made public his successful videotape, 'What's My Name', it produced enormous debate between dog adorers. It stems from irresponsible breeders, trainers and owners. "So he told police they were English Bull Terriers. Fenstermacher adds that dog owners are mating the APBT with any kind of dog, mating for personal violence, and making very unbalanced canines. Stahlkuppe asserts that still with all the awful exposure, the American Pit Bull Terrier is an extremely admired animal. n which one or many dogs would enter a ring, and try to pin the bull by grabbing onto the bull's nose. "Boxers, American Bull dogs, Bull Terriers (the long-faced Spud Mc Kenzie party dogs), and Bull Dogs (the English sour mugs) have all been mistakenly branded as American Pit Bull Terriers at one time or another" (Stahlkuppe 6).
