A Good Wife

According to the text, a ¡§good wife¡ is ¡§man¡s most precious treasure. She belongs to him so profoundly that she partakes of the same essence as he; she has his name, his gods, and he is responsible for her¡ (Page 175). A woman whom been considered as a ¡§good wife¡ should regard her husband¡s wishes are as laws appointed for her by divine will. If she endures them with patience and gentleness, she will rule her home with ease, otherwise, not so easily. A ¡§good wife¡ should be the mistress of her home, having under her care all that is within it. ¡§The existence that man disperses the outside world in work and activity in concentrated within her immanence: she guarantees the recurrence of meals, of sleep; she restores whatever has been destroyed or worn out by activity, preparing food for her husband, caring for him when he is sick, mending, washing¡ (Page 177), show her quality, encouraging him ever with words of cheer and yielding him obedience in all fitting way when he is down. She also should have her own ¡§beauty, charm, intelligence, and elegance¡, which forms a excellent appearance to be the ¡§outward and visible signs of her husband¡s wealth¡ showing to the outside world.
In a husband¡s eyes, a ¡§good wife¡ is ¡§his measure and his earthly portion¡ (Page 175). She gets her knowledge from him, she is ¡§par excellence the 'clay in his hands,¡ which can be passively worked and shaped by educating, marking and setting his imprint upon her¡ (page 176). Then ¡§since the appearance of Christianity the figure of woman has obviously been spiritualized to a considerable extent¡, man no longer seeing his wife according to her physical forms but instead his wife becomes his soul. His wife becomes ¡§the soul of the house, of the family, of the home. And she is the soul of such larger groups, also, as the city, state, and nation¡ (Page 177).
