Anne Bradstreet's Poetry

Anne Bradstreet's poetry is based how high she value's possessions. In her writings, Bradstreet expresses that materialistic possessions are not important to her. A poetry book, complementing Bradstreet and her ability to express herself, states "Despite her active domestic life and the hardships imposed by a new and strange environment, Anne Bradstreet still found time to express herself in verse." ("The American Experience 21) Bradstreet expresses her feelings and devotion towards her husband , her children, her religion, and her feelings toward Anne Bradstreet wrote poems to express her devotion to her husband and children.

She is frank when she states "And to my god my heart did cry" (line 8) in the poem "Upon the Burning 2of Our House", and reveals her devotion towards her God and religion. Bradstreet expresses, in some of her poems, her feelings and devotion to her husband, children, religion, and her feelings toward materialistic possessions. Bradstreet's most important possessions are expressed in her writings, usually with symbolism. Bradstreet reveals these personality characteristics using symbolism. Although Anne Bradstreet uses symbolism to express her devotion towards her husband and children, she doesn't use much when expressing her devotion towards her religion. She is refering to heaven when she writes "above. As Bradstreet reveals that her house is of high value to her, she explains that her children, husband, and her religion are much more precious. " In This line, Bradstreet implies that her possessions are insignificant, and that what is in heaven is precious. Most people today value materialistic possessions higher than family and religion, however, Anne Bradstreet doesn't, and this fact is obvious in her poems. em "To My Dear and Loving Husband", a poem written only for her husband: "I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold," (line 5). To express her devotion to her religion, She also writes, in this same poem, "My hope and treasure lies above" (line 54). She values her husband's love higher than gold. In this poem, Bradstreet speaks of God again when she uses the words "his name" in the line "I blest his name that gave and took" (line 14). In the poem "Upon the Burning of Our House", it is obviously upsetting for her to watch the house burn down.
