Rising College Tuition
The topic of rising college tuition costs is an issue that hits very close to home. Being a student, it is very hard to deal with attending a school that has high tuition costs. The University of New Hampshire has one of the highest tuitions for state schools in the country. For out of state students UNH is one of only 22 schools out of 575 listed on CollegeBoard.Com that costs more than $20,000 for tuition. This fact is a major problem today when more schools each year are raising their tuition costs for students. A few of the biggest points that CQ makes about rising college costs are wasted money on extravagant facilities, overpaid administrators, and under worked faculty. These issues are very serious, and they can be seen all over the country, even in the little town of Durham, NH. While UNH doesn't really have overpaid administrators in the "half million dollar club" we do have extravagant facilities as well as under worked faculty. To be fair though, the under worked faculty do seem to be under paid as well. UNH has been undergoing renovations on various class rooms and residence halls for the past 3 years, and in the past 3 years what do we have to show for it? We have an enormous residence hall, Mills Hall, whi
There is a major problem in this country when it comes to higher education. The biggest problem is that the students who come from middle class families get the worst treatment. The issues on campus at UNH could be debated for weeks on end with no resolution, but the issues do not end at the UNH campus; these problems are nation wide. ch contains suite style living quarters for students. Federal student aid and work study programs would follow if the plan was not followed. This could backfire however, and cause faculty to be further under paid, or cause the quality of life on a campus to go down drastically by not having funding for student programming. The student described in CQ whose parents decided to move to Florida is a perfect example of this situation. It will force colleges to make sure they are spending money in the right places in cases of reconstruction of campus facilities. This is a question without a simple answer because the result seems to be a catch 22. The other issue is that of under worked faculty. A big question is whether or not the federal government should increase funding for higher education. Many of the faculty who double as office assistants are teaching because they are needed within their departments because there aren't enough professors to cover all the students that need to be taught. These are the faculty that are willing to help out in any way possible usually, and unfortunately are usually the ones that are under paid as well.
