The term client/server came into existence during the early 1980's when networking personal computers became popular. The basic concept behind the model is that there is one machine that request a service and one machine that provides a service. The machine making the request is known as the client and the one providing the service is the server. Before the client/server model was introduced there were two main distributed system models being commonly used but both were showing their age in the modern computingThe first of these was the mainframe architecture. This had a powerful central host computer that carried out all the processing. To use the system the user connected to the mainframe via a dummy terminal. However as the industry moved towards the use of Graphical User Interfaces this model started to falter as incorporating them was very difficult.The second type is the file sharing architecture. In this model the server sends the requested file to the terminal where it can be used. This means that it uses the terminals resources taking a lot of strain off the server. The old mainframes are often used as the server in this system. If the data is in the right format for the DBMS to handle it will submit the requests immediately but many DBMS will need the SQL command translated into its native language. Perhaps the only let down to this architecture is that many people feel that it's harder to use the development area. SQL started life in the 1970's as a prototype language from IBM called SEQUEL which stood for "Structured English Query Language". SQL has three main tasks that it can carry out these are data manipulation, data definition and data management. The ODBC performance overheads can also lead to reduced performance and it may not be suitable for use on websites as it requires the browser to be configured to handle it. The JDBC calls are translated into the middleware vendor's protocol and this is then changed into a database specific protocol by the middleware. This layer may require a DBMS specific network component depending on the data source5. JDBCJava has exploded onto the scene in recent years especially amongst developers of web based application and one of the most important reasons for this explosion was the "Java Database Connectivity" or JDBC for short. This system allows a much larger number of clients to be connected and can easily handle a thousand separate connections without any performance loss. When the monitor accepts the request it will place it into a queue and will then handle the process until it's completed. In fact SQL doesn't mean anything and is pronounced "S Q L".
