Joseph McCarthy:America's Demagouge

Joseph McCarthy: America's Demagogue Culture is the way a group of individuals define themselves. Behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought combine and evolve to create a groups's culture. The United States boasts of many individuals who have made significant contributions which have shaped the beliefs and ideals of modern society. Through his attacks on communism, Joseph McCarthy negatively impacted American culture by employing unethical tactics, by discouraging the public to use the First Amendment, and by discouraging producers and authors from publishing radical media.Joseph McCarthy employed unethical tactics against others in his ruthless attacks on communism, negatively impacting individual lives and American culture. Even before he engaged in his attacks on communism and his enlistment in World War II, he used his smear tactics against other politicians. When running for circuit court judge in Wisconsin, he attacked his opponent Edgar Werner. Many were appalled at the way he smeared Werner, publishing false media claiming that Werner was 73 and senile. This claim was obviously false, as Werner was only 66. McCarthy also said that Werner was financially cor

Radical movements or ideas became immensely unpopular, so much so that professors taught bland material, avoiding controversial issues (Schrecker 1). McCarthy again attacked an opponent's finances, claiming that La Follette was guilty of war profiteering. Many of the people placed on this list were not communist, but fascist, alcoholics, and sexual deviants. We can look back on McCarthy and see him for what really was, but will we fall for another McCarthy when the war on terror gets out of hand?. All the pressure exerted by these groups to remove communist literature put equal pressure on producers not to publish movies or books with "radical" views. Because of his harsh attacks on others, speaking against McCarthy in the Senate became political suicide. Other groups who sought to emulate McCarthy saw this latest attack as a way to gain clout among the public. Of all the major studios, Universal International was the only one not to make any anti-communist films (Navasky 4). Throughout the nation books containing pictures depicting city slums, UNESCO material, and all books by critically acclaimed Howard Fast were purged from school libraries (Navasky 2). McCarthy, if screened, would have been placed on this list, because he was an alcoholic and sexual deviant himself (Joseph McCarthy 2). This report had in-fact been used in an investigation two years earlier by the House Appropriations Committee. "The Happiest Man on Earth," by Albert Maltz won the O' Henry Memorial Short Story award in 1938. He claimed these were leaked to him by loyal employees of the State Department. McCarthy's attacks forced many politicians and citizens into disgrace, even causing one man to take his own life.
