Disney Land, America

In the essay "The City of Robots" Umberto Eco describes his experiences at Disneyland. At the end of his essay Eco claims that Disneyland is America's "Sistine Chapel"-a place where our true national values are shown in artistic form. I agree with this claim. To show why I agree with Eco's claim, I am going examine both the Sistine Chapel and Disneyland. I want to show what they are and what their values mean to each nation, because by doing so one will begin to see that they are not so different after all.The Sistine Chapel is a famous chapel in the palace of the Vatican in Rome. The chapel was built between 1475 and 1483, in the time of Pope Sixtus IV. The chapel is a simple rectangle in shape and is not very big only 134 feet long, 44 feet wide and 85 feet high. A flattened barrel vault, with little side vaults over the centered windows, roofs it. The thing that makes the Sistine Chapel so amazing is its walls and ceiling. On its walls and ceiling are some of the greatest art ever produced in the Western world. The wall paintings were painted by Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli and their workshops, which included Pinturicchio, Piero di Cosimo and Bartolomeo della Gatta

He painted the Last Judgement over the altar, between 1535 and 1541, being commissioned by Pope Paul III Farnese. His first thought was that the theme park should be eight acres at a place near Burbank Studios, California, but he decided he needed a place much bigger. Walt created Fantasy Land in the park so people's dreams could come true. Michelangelo Buonarroti was commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in 1508 to repaint the ceiling; the work was completed between 1508 and 1512. Walt Disney had everything he wanted in his theme park on paper. By meting one of the Disney characters from one of the Disney movies or TV shows you grew up watching as a kid. The biggest thing that removes us from reality is the fact that Disneyland is based on imagination not reality. The great paintings in the chapel tell you stories, leave you feeling very amazed, and let you lose touch with reality. By looking up and around at all these great paintings that take your breathe away, one gets the feeling that everything is right there at his/her finger tip, and your left feeling very amazed. What I mean by this is that there is so much going on in Disneyland that it overwhelms you , and you begin to think that you are in one of the Disney movies you saw as a kid. Disneyland is limitless in dreams, you can experience anything from being haunted by ghost to seeing wild animals. It is the place where we can experiences some of the dreams that are in our heads. This can happen in a number of ways. And both of them let its visitors lose touch with reality.
