             1. Describe and explain how and why the economic, political, social and cultural development of the 1920's reflected an era of transition and tensions.
             The 1920's promoted radio, movies, advertising, and mass-circulation magazines. Sex clashed with the traditional values of hard work, thrift, church, family and home. The cultural differences were a direct reflection of the urban-rural conflict. Many people were clinging to the old values and ways of traditional America. Most Americans feared the new cultural values and the new scientific breakthroughs and biblical criticism threatened their familiar way of life.
             During the 1920s the attendance at Christian colleges and the circulation of fundamentalist periodicals and newspapers increased dramitically. Evangelical ministers reached large audiences. The fundamentalists succeeded in winning many converts because their leaders were skilled at using modern technology
             Immigrants also were seemed to threaten the old ways of the American way of life. Over one million immigrants poured into America during 1920, despite the restricted movements that had been in effect since earlier in the decade. The mexican immigrants were the largest of the immigrant groups.
             Women struggled in the 1920s on their role in society. Women acquired more sexual freedom during this time in American history. Contraceptives became more readily available during this decade.
             Family size declined during the 1920s. Electricty, running water, washing machines, vacuumes and other cleaning machines made housework more easier for the middle class. More women worked outside of the home compared to in 1890 only 17 percent were employed. Women held low-paying jobs and most women assumed that their marriage would terminate if they were employed.
