Many symbols are used to show the meaning of something going on in the Scarlet Letter. Symbols are used to stand for something else. There are many important symbols throughout the book. I think that the most important symbol is the Scarlet Letter "A".
             One symbol in the book is the rose. The rose stands for "sweet moral blossom". It grows next to an unsightly plot of weeds in front of the prison. I think it stands for the good out of all the evil in the Puritan community. It shows good in all of the sorrow in the book.
             The reason for a prison is described by the symbol of the grass plot. It is "much overgrown with burdock, pigweed, apple-peru, and such unsightly vegetation. It is mostly used to show why there is a need for a prison in the corrupted community. It ties along with the rosebush because it is next to the grass plot of weeds, which symbolizes the good and the evil of the story.
             The prison and the cemetery are symbols that represent life, punishment, and death. The prison is described as "the black flower of civilized society". It represents the need for crime and punishment. Also the cemetery goes along with the prison to show that crimes and punishment will cause death. They are used to also show life and death.
             The scaffold is a symbol shown to represent how hard the Puritans are on those who commit crimes. Throughout the story there are 3 scaffold scenes. I think another meaning of the scaffold scenes is to show guilt or sin of a character. It is the place where Dimmesdale goes to compensate for his sin of Adultery. It shows where Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl are when it is revealed who the secret lover of Hester is.
