Zora Neal Hurston
In Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, there are many strong emotions conveyed to the readers so that the overall message of if a person is in love that love can change them time and time again making the best at times and the worst at times. Throughout out the novel the character of Janie went through many changes as she moved on in her relationships. As the novel progressed she moved from young naive to socially active but obeying wife to a free spirited women ready for it all. This is why this novel is so popular because it expresses the changes many women go through in love. These changes include many big events and changes in Janie's life. Her life is complicated and requires someone to make her feel free again and it does happen at one point but it doesn't start off that way. In the beginning her first husband was very protective and she was very naive. They got married and at the time Janie didn't love Logan but her Nanny told her that after they were married she would love him. She soon realizes that she truly doesn't love him and she comes to her Nanny to ask her why doesn't she love him yet, "Cause you told me Ah mus gointer love him, and, and Ah don't. Maybe if somebody was to tell me how, Ah could do it
This was one of the greatest feelings Janie had ever had. He almost snarled when he saw her dressed to go (Hurston 181). She did this because Logan hit her and that brought of the strongest emotions in any one. They eventually got married and lived together for a while in great happiness. When she finally got a chance to spend time with him it caused another change in Janie, when she was around him she felt as though she was young again. This may be the reason she had the courage to shoot him because she felt that he was going and that she was killing the disease. Joe was a popular man and became mayor of the town; this made Janie very excited and happy for him. Hurston uses her strong emotions in her different love relationships to convey how she will change. So she was up and dressed when Teacake awoke from the fitful sleep that had come to him just before day. Janis soon realized many things about herself marriage and life and love in general, "The familiar people and things had failed her so she hung over the gate and looked up the road towards way off. She's uh woman and her place is in de home (Hurston 43). One day while working at the store a man came in and it seemed to be like love at first sight for Janie he was handsome and appeared to be just perfect for her. This novel conveyed a message of love equals changes of both good and bad and Hurston did a superb job of expressing this using the emotions of the main character Janie. Janie saw a changing look come in his face.
