Our Town

            Thornton Wilders Our town explore the appreciation of ever day pleasures. The main theme is telling ud that we should not take life for granted and that we should appreciate every moment in our lives. it looks at a time of innocence and simplicity before the Great Wars. Our Town is a plce that is made to appeal to all people; an ordianry, small town, filled with ordianry places and people. the play spans the first decade of the 20th century, from 1901 to 1913.
             Our Town refers to Grovers Corners, a small town located in NH, just across the Massachusetts line. The story of Grovers Corners is told by the stage Manager and focuses on the GIbbs' and the Webb's, who are neighbors. George Gibbs and Emilly Webb were friends since childhood. By 1913 their frienship grew into romantic love. they get married with the attendance of all the Grovers Corners characters. Unfortunately, their happiness does not last longt. Emily dies during childbirth. Her funeral takes place on an unpleasant rainy day. Her spirit then reunites with friends that have died in the past and who help her to adjust to her new existance. Althought the play focuses on the Gibbs' and Webb's it is not the only story told. It gives a general look at simple life in a simple town based on how Americans of that time were and were perceived.
             The stage design shows just how simple things were. There are two platforms which are the main streets in the town, two tables, and two ladders. No props are used in the play which makes the audience use their imagination. i believe this gets the audience more involved in whats going on.
             Our Town starts off rather slow. You are introduced to the stage manager who tells you about the town and what goes on. He constantly servs as the link between the actors and the audience, giving vital information, and also acts out multiple parts during the play.
