French Revolution

             The French Revolution brought great changes in government and the society of France. The French Revolution lasted from 1789 to 1799. The Revolution in France introduced democratic ideas, but did not make France a democracy. Through the French Revolution came the ideas of liberty and equality after the Revolution no European Kings, nobles, or any other privileged groups could ever take their powers for granted. The French Revolution began with the French government in financial crisis but the Revolution quickly became a movement of reform and violent change. During the French Revolution the "Reign of Terror" began with the seizing of the Bastille in Paris. The Bastille was a royal fortress that was a symbol of oppression to the people of France. In the seizing of the Bastille King Louis the XVI and his wife, Marie Antainette were captured and executed by the people.
             The background of the French Revolution had various social, political, and economic conditions that led to the French Revolution. These conditions included the dissatisfaction among the lower and middle class. Another condition that led to the French Revolution is the interest in new ideas about government, and financial problems caused by the costs of wars. The separation among the social groups that had existed for hundreds of years crated much discontent among the ordinary people of France. The laws in France during this time period separated three groups that consisted of clergyman in the first estate, Nobles in the second estate, and the rest of the people in the third estate. The new ides of the French Revolution about government challenged Frances absolute monarchy. Under this monarchy developed a financial crisis, the French Government had gone deep into debt financing and fighting the Seven Years' War (1756 to 1763) and the Revolutionary War in America (1775 to 1783).
