The Islamic accomplishments in medicine were remarkable. Islamic physicians discovered the value of cauterization and of styptic agents, diagnosed cancer of the stomach, prescribed antidotes for cases of poisoning, and made notable progress in treating diseases for the eyes. There were at least thirty-four great hospitals located in the principal cities of Persia, Syria, and Egypt, which appeared to be organized in a strikingly modern fashion. Each had wards for particular cases, a dispensary, and a library. The chief physicians and surgeons lectured to the students and graduates, examined them, and issued licenses to practice. Islamic physicists founded the science of optics and drew a number of significant conclusions regarding the theory of magnifying lenses and the velocity, transmission and refraction of light (Joseph Hell, The Arabian Civilization).
Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Musa, also known as al-Khwarizimi, is best known for introducing the mathematical concept of Algoritgm to the Islamic civilization. He is the greatest mathematician that ever lived. Al-Khwarizimi is the founder of Algebra-he not only initiated the subject in a systematic form but also developed it to the extent of giving analytical solutions of linear and quadratic equations. He developed in detail trigonometric tables containing the sine function. He also developed the calculus of two errors, which led him to the concept of differentiation (Thomas Arnold, The Legacy of Islam).
