Controversy On The Beach
A big issue in the South today has arisen from the confederate battle flag that was used during the Civil War. Many people argue that the battle flag should fly across the southern states. In Harrison County, Mississippi there has been controversy over the issue to continue flying the battle flag. After the state was awarded to keep its own flag, with the symbol of the confederate flag on it, many angry citizens in Harrison County want the confederate battle flag to come down. Both sides present a good argument pertaining the flag issue. The Eight Flags Beach was originally part of a private theme park that opened in the late 1960's. The park had always included the confederate battle flag to represent the era during which Mississippi was part of the Confederacy. Since the 1970's, the display has been debated on and off at many supervisors' meetings. The flag was initially intended to represent the eight governments that had ruled over Mississippi since 1699. With that being the case, many citizens from Harrison County feel that the confederate flag would have to be a legitimate part of the display since
The NAACP will more than likely come back to Mississippi and try to change the decision. In regards to the tourism attraction, in 2001, 19 percent of the Gulf Coast's visitors were black, and in 2002, 26 percent of tourists also African American. With the African American attraction rising on the beach in the past years, the owners must not sell the items the buyers want. Bringing the flag down would make some of the business owners very happy. They brought up that the flag stood for hate, evil, and bigotry. Many residents however believe that issue is only brought up because the flag is one of the few things that has 2stayed with the south since the Civil War time era. The minorities will find something to make a case over. This would end the beach issue and if anyone would like to wave the flag at his/her home they may do so. The flag to them resembles the time period of slavery and when slaves were treated like animals. The issue over slavery will not end however if the flag is brought down. It all started when the NAACP heard the noise in Mississippi and they came running. In order to make both groups happy, the board must come together and set aside certain time periods to have the flag up and waving. They want to press the issue of racism toward any supporter of the confederate flag.
