The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende is a novel about a family and it travels through four generations. The setting of this story is in Chile and it describes the life of the Trueba family. The Truebas are a high family in the Latin American government. The story begins on a Holy Thursday. The great-grandparents of the family, Severo and Nivea del Valle, are commenced to the reader. All the way through the novel, Allende describes the lives of each generation of the family and the difficulty that they have to go through. But, these are not just any normal hardships. The suffering this family has to go through is not like any misfortune of an average family.
             This family so different and special, but why you ask? They have a relationship like no other family. A connection so unbreakable, that only a family with ghostly powers could have. This is exactly what the Truebas have to put up with throughout their lifetimes. Clara, what I believe to be the key female figure in the story, was born with a powerful gift. This gift allows her to be able to predict all the events that will happen to her. To me this made the story a lot harder to follow. Trying to keep track of what Clara predicted and the actual event was very difficult. Though it was hard following the story because of this gift, it made the story a lot more interesting. You see exactly what the child is thinking and that makes you feel as if you are right there with her. While I was reading the book I felt a sentiment of sorry for Clara. Contrary of what many think, growing up is very hard. With the gift that she has it would be a lot harder.
             One theme that I found throughout the entire book was the theme of women. The central characters of the book are all women who work in different and clever ways to stress their rights.
