Hunger in the US

             As the world population grows so does the amount of people that live without the proper amount of nutrition and food. Many people do not realize that hunger and malnutrition is a problem that many Americans face on a daily basis. Perhaps, we have overlooked the obvious failing to realize that our country is not perfect and is subject to "third-world" problems such as starvation. For decades we, as Americans, have gone above and beyond the call of duty and aid other countries that were faced with problems such as malnutrition and hunger. Sadly, though we have failed to aid ourselves and bring and end to our own country's problem. Instead of feeding the needy here in the U.S., we continue to send food to other countries. This is not a bad thing. However, we as Americans need to take care of ourselves, and our fellow Americans.
             The problem with hunger what the United States faces may not be as dramatic as that of other countries, but this is all the more reason to find ways that truly create a solution. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World said, "As much as we'd like to think that ours is a generous society, the fact is that the riches country in the world does less that any other developed nation to combat pervasive hunger" (Apples for Health). It is hard to believe that one of the most powerful and richest countries would not be more organized in a way that could help combat hunger. Jeff Bridges, actor and founder of Hunger Free America said, "It is embarrassing and inexcusable that in a wealthy nation like ours, 12 million kids are at risk of hunger." (Jeff Bridges, Sharon Davis, Jim Hahn pg1). The tow statements both refer to our country as wealth and still are not proud of what is being done about hunger in America.
