The Sacred and The Profane
"The Sacred and the Profane" is a literary work written by Mircea Eliade, and translated from Greek to English by Willard Trask. It is a text that helps to differentiate the relationship between the sacred and the profane thoughts that we have as humans and people of a rational thinking socity. Coming from page thirty nine, Eliade says that, "This same symbolism of the center explains other series of cosmological images and religious beliefs. Among these the most important are: first that, holy sites and sanctuaries are believed to be situated at the center of the world; two, temples are the replicas of the cosmic mountain and hence constitute the pre-eminent "link" between earth and havens; lastly the foundations of temples descend deep into the lower regions." These houses are not just objects, "it is the universe that man constructs for himself by imitating the paradigmatic creation of the gods, the cosmogony. When a temple or sanctuary is erected in a town or village it brings a special vibe or feeling with it. " In all religious customs there is the idea of holy places, and what the significances of these buildings relate too. In all types of religions there are always holy places or places to worship. Religion is a very powerful thing; without it some people could not live, or function. Everything revolves around this one place; in some strange way this is true, the earth that we live on is the shape of a sphere, so because of this really no matter where you are standing you are still in the center. Temples are also a big part of the religious experience. These are the main ideas that are expressed through temples and or holy sanctuaries; it is all about the location and the look. Could there be religion without these monasteries, of course; but could there be these sanctuaries with out religion, no way. Religion and the places that humans worship there religion are both very sacred ideas and places. These "houses of the gods" bring with them a feeling, a presence along with them; a feeling of security and being, allowing people to have that special feeling of belonging. llage or merely a house represents a serious decision, for the very existence of man is involved. Temples or sanctuaries help bring forth the ideas and the feelings that accompany the feelings that having a religion give you.
