Society Goes Pop

In the realm of the music industry, pop music reigns. It seems as if every week another “pop star” is born, and true music lovers observe these teenage sensations and ask what makes this guy or girl so much different from all the others? This is a question no one can really answer, because in the last decade or so there has been no difference. Pop music does not change. But this is where it gets interesting. It’s not even about the music anymore. When listeners here “pop music,” they can automatically associate the genre with good looking teenage kids who may be able to carry out a note or two. This association sparks controversy. And controversy creates problems. Rarely do pop stars play instruments, and most are not very good vocalists. So, what does it take? What exactly does it take to become a “pop star”? It no longer matters if you have a good voice or any musical talent at all for that matter. In reality, you need no talent. That’s not the way the music business should work. In one of the first episodes, I heard this one woman sing, and she had the voice of an angel. Take it a level further – sex appeals sells. All the publicity pop music takes on needs to be channeled toward those who deserve it – to those who actually work hard to make their music. But who selected who stayed and who was cut? The viewers had the fate of these kids in their own hands. But the look is only part of the controversy. And without that feeling, the feeling of being alive, the feeling of reality as it falls around you, the music has no meaning. Someone who listens to rock music will not listen to pop music as well, and it’s not just to give pop music tons of exposure while leaving other styles in the dark. The media is everywhere, and the media is everything. I thought I was the only one in the entire world not watching. Pop artists cannot be considered members of a band or even musicians. They did not even notice me knocking at the door which was directly next to the room they were all in.
