Ancient Mexico

“Ancient Mexico, an overview,” by Jaime Litvak King is a book about the history about Mexico. She begins the book with the very beginnings of Mexican civilization and through all the hardships the Indians had to endure with the invasion of Spanish conquistadors and Hernan Cortes.

In my opinion the importance of the history is tremendous. As a native Mexican, I personally was fascinated with the history of my people and my heritage. Being part Aztec, learning the history of the Aztec Indians was the most beneficial to me.

The subject matters of certain chapters in the book were quite interesting. As stated earlier, being part Aztec, the chapters concerning the Aztec Indians were the most influential chapters. At the same time, learning about the other cultures that intermingled with my ancestors was just as exciting. King goes into great detail concerning ancient artifacts that help date the numerous societies that roamed the land. “ The Olmec built the first pyramid in Ancient Mexico, so

. . .
“Quetzalcoatl, the feathered snake, who probably started as a culture hero and became an important god by himself. She goes into detail about the key gods and their significance to the culture of the area. She talks about the different styles used and how each area had a very unique form which varied in color, graphics, and materials used. She lacks a bibliography and the only other books that she mentions is her suggested reading list. Her dates and her facts are all on target. She going into greater detail about Teotihuacan, a city where there are two large pyramids, one for the moon and the other for the sun. For example, Neil Baldwin writes, “The essential unity and crucial interdependence pervading the Mesoamerican community was set in motion by the Olmec, bears of the ‘Mother Culture.

King lacks the use of any form of primary sources. “ Its pottery, a thin orange ware and a brown, cylindrical, stick-polished vessel is found throughout Mesoamerica.

The book itself is very well organized. She goes through the entire history from the prehistoric beginnings to the fatal demise of the Aztecs in 1521. ”

King also describes the significance of all the gods of the Mesoamerican people.
