The Effect of Multicultural Education on the Classroom Environment Today, teachers are faced with a growing number of diverse students in the classroom, each with their own ethnic and cultural background that influences the way each student learns. By the year 2015, the Anglo population will be in the minority in this country. Research statistics concur this fact therefore; teacher candidate preparation must be aligned with this knowledge. By definition, multicultural education is education that values cultural pluralism. It rejects the view that schools should seek to melt away cultural differences or the view that schools should merely tolerate cultural pluralism. It affirms that cultural diversity is a valuable resource that should be preserved and extended. It also should be established that people everywhere have the same needs although they may meet them in different ways. These kinds of materials and teaching strategies can result in students choosing more friends from outside racial, ethic, and cultural groups (Banks, 440). The racial conflict in the story is obvious to the reader yet is a good educational book for young students, to teach them how racism is hurtful and unnecessary. There are many areas in the classroom that could use diversity. Coleman's grandmother, as a young girl, growing up in segregated Mississippi. There is also bead making which the Egyptians have been doing for centuries or even Kufi hats to show as an example of African heritage. Children can make drums and shakers to enhance this experience. This awareness in turn may alter negative stereotypic thinking, reduce intolerance, and promote cooperation (Cohen, 86). It would have to be explained to the children that these items are only worn for special occasions. It can give the children a picture to go along with what they are learning. Like the other stories this one also provides children with an idea of how things used to be in the past with segregation. There is also a lot of cultural music that the children can listen to and learn new and exciting dances. You could have each child mix and match to find their skin color and create self-portraits. You can also take children to cultural restaurants; this will give them an opportunity to meet new people and taste foods from other cultures.
