Education of Little Tree
Modern America could benefit from the Indian philosophy that nature is a living soul. In the book Education of Little Tree, the author explores the Indian belief in "The Way." It maintains that nature is a living entity that must be treated with respect. One must be conscious of what one takes from it and how one can give back to the land. America strives on romance and material possessions, where as Indians truly try to co-exist with nature. Indians take time to understand nature and have their own beliefs on how to treat the world. The author tries to depict the life of a Cherokee Indian boy in a struggle of growing up in America. The boy Little Tree goes through many encounters with other people and learns to deal with many situations. When Little Tree and his grandfather first stepped on to the bus, grandpa held firm and tall. He was trying to show the white folk that he was not a week man. He paid the bus driver and looked straight at him. He then turned down the isle and guided little tree to an empty seat. Many of the people stared at them and began to laugh. Little Tree didn't feel to confident about this. He did not understand why the white man could hate the Indians so much.
Little Tree, still open to his own beliefs, believed most of what grandpa said. Americans could benefit from "The Way" because; they could stop being greedy and take the week, that way every one would take what they need and no more. Maybe if the American society would open up to the Indian culture just a little bit, they might find that helping each other besides fighting and competing would benefit them to understand people better. You clean up nature and surely nature will help you back. This helps nature take only the strong and reproduce even better animals then the last generation. " Grandpa explains how when an animal is hunted by another animal, it is good, because it helps nature to grow stronger. Americans could use this philosophy in their lives. Spending time with nature is a great way to calm one down and help understand life. If an animal is week or is not as strong as the rest of it's species, it is ok for another animal to take that week one for food. Without all the competition that "The Way" doesn't come with, plenty of pressure and competition would be taken away, and everyone could focus more on what really makes them happy like nature, family, and friends. He makes the request to Grandpa and Little Tree to be buried outside his house next to his favorite tree. In chapter one Grandpa teaches Little Tree about "The Way. The idea was that if Willow John were buried under the tree he would be able to provide at least two years of food for the tree to live from his body. They are never satisfied with anything, they want more and more. It is never enough for Americans; one must have the best at all times.
