The Crucible
The Crucible, by Arthur Miller is a place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change of development ,it is fixated on the Salem witch trials. Although the witch trials is the main aspect of the play , other topics should be looked upon as well. For example two characters in the book, John and Elizabeth Proctor have their own interesting story that is particularly special. In the story, John and Elizabeth are a married couple going through the hardships of their commitment to each other. The Crucible is also a story of a marriage in which a couple struggles to honorably live out their commitment to one another despite their own personal fallings. John Proctor is man of great strength and even temper. He is a well respected man in the Puritan community. However he is a sinner, not only to his religious beliefs but according to himself. He is marri
He feels this way because he went against the beliefs of his church, the expectation of his wife and his own vision of decent conduct. Both John and Elizabeth are accused and John has the choice of confessing to witchcraft and saving his life or being hanged. Before he dies,Reverend Hale asks Elizabeth to reason with her husband. In act two of the play the tension between John and Elizabeth is demonstrated in many different instances, John yells at Elizabeth, Elizabeth questions John, the atmosphere between them is uncomfortable. One can see that Elizabeth has not fully forgiven John for what he did and she has certainly not forgotten. In the Puritan Religion, there is no way of confessing one's sins or washing them away from ones soul. Many people in modern society can and need to learn from these two characters. It is a story of the hardships of the early Puritan life. But only a short time beforethe witch hysteria began , he had an affair with a 17 year old girl named Abigail Williams, the Proctors former housemaid. Because of this, John has no way of extinguishing his guilt "he has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud". When Elizabeth Proctor finds out about John and Abigail she fires Abigail as a housemaid, but she still doesn't trust John. Although the story of John and Elizabeth Proctor is not the main topic, it is an important aspect of this play. In this scene, one can sense that there is unseen friction between them.
