Getting Chills from Pacific Heights

Getting Chills From "Pacific Heights'" Thrills Suspense films dish out "edge-of-your-seat" anxiety with nail biting anticipation to the audience by making them feel as though they were part of the experience instead of a mere spectator. "Pacific Heights," directed by John Schlesinger, may have been more dramatic than suspenseful but it definitely delivered enough of both to keep the audience intrigued and thirsting for more. Men make all decisions, are never wrong, and can remain rational in any situation while women are submissive, wear skirts and cater to their husbands' every whim, but not in "Pacific Heights". Melanie Griffith

"Patty" is the definite heroin of the film by not only slaying the demon "Hayes," but by also using her head and screwing him over and regaining "Drake's" identity and money. As long as the audience can root for the hero and yell at the enemy, the movie is a success and has created a connection between them. Some say the plot of "Pacific Heights" isn't realistic, but that shouldn't matter because it's only entertainment. He lies to everyone, but somehow no one realizes it and he goes on his scheming way. She takes care of any jam the couple gets into and never loses her cool in their times of crisis, even when she comes face to face with their tenant from hell, "Carter Hayes". He's manipulative, conniving, cunning, and so good at it. If the role reversal between "Drake" and "Patty" or the constant turbulence with "Carter's" residency weren't enough to keep the audience in their seats, Keaton's manifestation of "Hayes" should have been enough to send chills down anyone's spine. Realism isn't something that needs to be in every film for it to appeal to the audience, emotion is. Add to this, "Carter," played by Michael Keaton, yes "Beetlejuice" himself, with his devilish smile and narrow eyes to produce the best villainous face since Jack Nicholson in "The Shining". Keaton magnificently portrayed the scheming "Hayes" better than anyone could and thus helped leave an impression on the audience that would resonate in their nightmares later. "Carter Hayes" is by far the best villain ever. plays "Patty," "Drake's" girlfriend, and from the beginning is shown to be the dominant of the two, making a role reversal of the sexes imminent. He became the epitome of all that was devious and mischievous throughout the film and was as delightful as the cockroaches he bred to cause havoc on the landlords. It means more than that and has actually happened to many real estate owners.
