Mononucleosis and the Epstein Barr Virus

             Epstein Barr Virus causes mononucleosis (mono). This virus will make you sick. It infects the throat and has symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, sore throat, and cough. It affects all age groups and has a big impact on younger and older people. This is a virus which is contagious and will only go away on its own.
             1. Epstein Barr Virus is a member of the herpes virus family. It is one of the more common viruses that infect humans. The virus infects the B-lymphocytes and lays dormant until the person's immune system is low. Usually, there are not any symptoms when a person becomes exposed to the virus but there are symptoms when the person becomes infected. Majority of people will be infected with this virus at some time in their life. When a teen or young adult becomes infected, it is usually in the form of mono, 35%-50% of the time. This virus has been discovered in more than just cases of mono. It is associated with Burkitt's Lymphoma, Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
             2. Some symptoms that you have the mono range depending on your age group. Symptoms take 4-6 weeks to appear. Young children normally don't show great signs but may have a fever, loss of appetite and are more tired. Fever, tiredness and swollen neck glands can occur in adults and older children. Mono can also cause you to have a sore throat and sore muscles. Also, your spleen can enlarge causing you to feel sharp pains in the upper left of your stomach. Your liver can also become enlarged. Nausea, headache, stiffness, chest pain, or difficulty breathing could also indicate symptoms of mono. In rare cases, heart problems and involvement of the central nervous system are involved. Mononucleosis is not fatal.
