A Midsummer Night Dream comperative essay
A Midsummer Night's Dream is arguably the best play ever written by William Shakespeare. The play has undergoes numerous transformations, being re-invented in musical and dozen of films. The text shows it great usefulness with each new interpretation depending on the director's version, A Midsummer Night's Dream can be a light fantasy, a dark nightmare, a jesting comedy, or a semi-serious melodrama. Michael Hoffman, director of the 1999 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream has present it on the big screen with a new look of modernize atmosphere and setting. Hoffman does not stay true to the text, but he must take liberties to allow this film to be entertaining to today's audience. In this essay I will compare the similarity and difference between the text version and the film version of Act 1.1, 2.1, and 3.1 in A Midsummer Night's Dream in terms of the setting and time, Hoffman's characters adaptation, and finally Hoffman's personal adaptation, In Michael Hoffman's film A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hoffman has made some changes to the location and time period of the play. Hoffman's change the setting of A Midsummer Night's Dream from Ancient Greece in the text to the 19th century in a town of Monte Athena in Italy. Hoffm
But viewers should give credits to Hoffman for his great imagination to make this film entertaining for today's audiences. Right at the beginning of the film, the audience can see these little people stealing objects. Another difference in the setting is In Act 2 scenes 1 the forest scene. Hoffman probably added this character to have a conflict between Bottom and his wife, so when Titania fells in love with Bottom, there will be a cause of the affair. Hoffman probably chooses modern clothing for the characters because he wants the audiences to feel comfortable when watching the movie, and not expecting just another Shakespeare movie. Also the indoor setting allows the fairies to observe the moral in a more believable setting. Also Hoffman's has added 4 little creatures in Act 3 Scene 1 where they capture Bottom and Bottom appears to be afraid. The intro is exactly the same as in the text where people are planning for the wedding and the castle as well. an's may haven chosen Italy instead of Greece for various reasons. They might need room to maneuver people and cameras, so the real outdoor will not do. Hoffman probably do this because he want to show another side of Bottom which the audience have no clue. For example: Theseus: Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour Draws on apace. An example is when Demetrius looking for Hernia in the forest, Helena was chasing after him telling Demetrius how much she love him and that she will do anything to win his love back, this scene show Helena desperation to be love. Also the film did not really adapted to the original text due to many changes by Hoffman's such as dialogue being left out; adding new characters, setting and time which has change the whole aspect of the play.
