Relationship between American Settlers and Indians

In the 1800's the relationship between the Indians and the American settlers was not very concrete. In fact it was pretty much non-existent. On several occasions Indians and settlers confronted and sometimes resided in peace and other times in bloodshed. In the spring of 1811, Shawnee Chief Tecumseh was not on good terms with the "white man". Tecumseh knew that settlers were growing in population and one day would destroy them. We took their land and moved them to some other place because we needed to room to take over and pollute everything we touch. The team enlisted a French-Canadian trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau, and his wife Sacajawea. In the summer (August) of 1805 the group reached the Missouri River, the land of the Shoshone Indians. Since the group of white men had an Indian woman, not to mention a Shoshone Indian they had a very peaceful stay in Indian Territory. In return a Choctaw chief told them that the white men were their friends and that they would not betray them if they trust them. In the summer of 1805 the Americans again met with the Indians with another attempt to convert them to Christianity.
