Police Brutality

The authors of these articles cited several studies to support their argument that African-Americans are the main targets of police brutality. Americans of any race can become victims of police brutality but statistics show that 87% of all documented police brutality cases in 1995 involved African-Americans. Police brutality has been around for a long time and it seems to have worsened over the years. According to Paynes, (1992), "The unrelenting brutality police wage against Blacks has never been the occasional 'sense less' aberration it is with others. Police brutality towards Blacks, on the contrary has its own cruel logic once you understand the racial history behind it. Plutarch described how the ancient Spartans used to control the Helots by weeding out the most spirited young men as a lesson to the others who would follow them. There is a similar rationale behind the excessive force police routinely inflict on African-Americans. It is part of a historical patte

However, hiring more African-American police officers did not solve the problem of police brutality then or now for that matter. It is obvious that police brutality is a major problem. That was not the end of Louima's punishments. When they arrived at the Brooklyn precinct the officers took him into the bathroom and continued to beat him. He was then held in a cell for several hours before being sent to the emergency room. Regardless of social class, education, or age African-Americans are still at risk. Then the officers shoved the broomstick in Louimas's mouth breaking several of his teeth. Before the officers took Louima down to the police station, they stopped and beat him. Walter Evans is living proof of this theory. Louima sued the police department and recovered millions of dollars. Evans is a well-known African-American surgeon in Detroit who also owns rental property. As a direct result of the Kerner Commission police departments were required to hire more African-American police officers in hopes of reducing police brutality in African-American communities. Police officers have this unwritten rule that does not allow them to report misconduct of fellow officers regardless of race.
