Harriet Tubman
Conductor on the Underground Railroad"Harriet Tubman was raised and slaved in Tidewater Maryland. They gave her the name of Araminta, Minta, or Minty. Her parents were Harriet Greene, also known as Rit, and Benjamin Ross, also known as Ben. The slaves in Maryland would tell time by the sun; sun up, sun high, sun down. There years were not divided by months but by seasons; Seedtime, Cotton Blossom time, Harvest, Christmas. The years were divided by the things that happened; the year... the master died, new mast was born, the big storm, early frost, long drought. Slaves in Maryland would always talk about freedom. Some say that if you could escape to the north you could become free, or if the master manumits them they would be free when he died for working so hard in the fields while the master was alive. If a slave were to runaway to the north and get caught they would whip them severely and brand them with an R o
Harriet figured that since no one wanted to own her she would be sent off to the chain gang, and she decided to escape. She had friends all along the Underground Railroad. The woman gave Harriet a place to stay for the night and then sent her off to the next nearby house. Harriet's owner decided to sell her a few weeks later but had a difficult time because her health was so injured, that a purchaser was not easily found. That was the start of the Underground Railroad for Harriet Tubman. Harriet left that night and head off through the woods to the woman's house that always stopped her in the fields. In 1860, Harriet took her last trip to Maryland to free an infant. Harriet even threatened to shoot a man that fell behind on her travels and wanted to turn back. Harriet had only come to Maryland on long winter nights when the owners of slaves stayed inside, nice and warm. Harriet repeated switching from home to home for about a week until she arrived in the north, Philadelphia. She also hired a man to follow the distributor of the wanted signs just so he could take them down right away. Harriet decided to run away on her own. Harriet made several trips back to her home land, Maryland. Harriet told her that she was running away and the lady said she had been expecting her.
