Windows NT

Windows NT is a multitasking, 32 bit operating system. It was invented to make today's processes run more efficiently. More than one version has been brought into the industry to work well with the changing technology of computers. The two versions are known as Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server. The Windows NT Server is designed to be used on a computer that is specifically made to withhold information and to be used as a "central office". This means that all commands will go through this one computer. Windows NT workstation is designed to be used on a computer that is connected to the server. It has only the necessary applications installed on it and uses the server to save files, and to access files. Both operating systems use the same kernel and operating system code and can act as an application server on NetWare and Microsoft (page 717). Microsoft started in the mid- 1980's when it was in cooperation with IBM. They created the OS/2 operating system, which was written in assembly language for a single processor 80286 system. Microsoft decided it wanted to fly away from the nest by developing "new technology" (NT). NT was originally supposed to be was supposed to use OS/2 as a native environment howeve

If NT did not have these protections built into it, many applications would cause the O/S to crash. If an O/S cannot handle errors in an efficient manner, it can become time consuming and very costly. Performance, Reliability, and Extensibility are three of the key factors and features that go into making a successful operating system. Thus making NTFS a lot more stable than a standard FAT system (page 719). This allows programs written for a different O/S such as DOS to be run under a NT environment without causing multiple errors or even crashing the system. The ease of use was increased and addition to a network was made less time consuming and less expensive (page 718). Many things are overlooked while creating an O/S however Microsoft did a very exceptional job over time in making today's leading Operating System. NT also comes with native NT file system (NTFS). Features play an enormous part in an operating system. An environmental subsystem will emulate different operating systems. Having the ability to run several threads at once gives the user a faster response time. If the software did not detect these conflicts, you could potentially have a system, which could go down for quite a number of days. A few features, which are a necessity in any growing business, are extensibility, reliability, and performance (pp 717-718). This automatically recovers from many kinds of file-system errors after a system crash.
