Wonda Why
In today's times the popularity of the hip-hop culture immerses us, a black community, in Fashion, Culture and Language. Every where you turn some form of this empire is in your sights, It has its grips holding tight on to anyone whom it can entrances with it's melodic beats and flo-etic dialect. A breakthrough in an American cultural society, Rap music and the hip-hop culture has been tarnished because of misogynistic and sexist lyrics a select few of the genre inhibitors choose to use as their form of expression. This blatant use of the "nasties" is what puts rappers such as Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 2Live Crew, And 2 Pac among others in the rap game. Typically, gangsta rappers use sexist and misogynistic lyrics for three reasons. First, they are selfish and seek to empower only themselves. Second, they put business before art: Songs with misogynistic lyrics sell millions of CDs and tapes. Sales mean money. Money means power. Finally, gangsta rappers reinterpret their experiences into a package able product that can sell. They peddle half-truths and fantasies that formulate a stereotypical mythology in which all black women are bitches and/or all gangsta rappers live the life of driving sports c
Perhaps the most ironic observation I can make is that if gangsta rappers were white, the reaction from the black community would be very differentEven though it is not the black community that financially empowers these young gangsta rap artists (by funding their hate lyrics), it is the black community that raises and nourishes them. Gangsta rappers constantly try to identify with the inner city black community or the people they come from. Got them legs wide open while you're sittin' at the bar Talkin' to some nigga 'bout his car. But sexism and misogyny in no way are restricted to black lyrics, they are just prevalent traits of gangsta rap genre. I don't at all condone the violence in this song, but the point I was making comes in the hook or chorus in the song. :You leave your kids with your mama cuz your headin' for the club in a skin tight miniskirt lookin' for some love. These lyrics to pose a problem for us in the black communities due to the fact that our black women are being degraded throughout these songs. The song is entitled Wonder Why They Call you Bitch. I turn to a song on Em's Marshall Mather's Lp entitled Kim. Gangsta rappers are often quoted as saying that they merely depict life as they see it. The second verse of this song is worded just perfect for this topic. In this song the word bitch was used to describe his wife Kim, obviously you only have a description of the track if you only could hear the actual piece you might agree with his use of language.
