Increase in Sex Education or an Increase in Population and Disease? Many students each year dread going to school because they know they are going to start sexual education. I was one of them, learning all of this very personal stuff from a teacher is extremely embarrassing. Most of the time each grade level learns the same thing. I remember learning the basics in 5th grade, then reviewing it again in 7th grade. Then in high school nothing changed and it was the same things I learned two previous years. Not only was it the same information, it was also the same type of lecture, pamphlets and videos. Between my time spent in fifth grade and entering my sophomore year of high school I'm sure new developments in this information and also new ways to teach sex education was introduced. Just a few new ideas to teach this information are through the aid of the Internet and computers, traditional, and of course at home. All four of these ideas should be incorporated into the school curriculum, especially high school; to help increase the amount of sex education future students will receive. Reducing the Risk is believed to work because of six highly effective "characteristics: 4a) a narrow focus on a small number of specific behavioral goals; b) a foundation in social learning theory and social influence theories; c) activities that personalize information on the risks of unprotected sex and how to avoid those risks; d) training about social influences; e) support for personal values and group norms against unprotected intercourse; f) exercises to develop skill; and g) training for persons delivering the program. Not only in school but also at home. Thinking back to your sexual education class in high school or even grade school you'll probably remember limited information and very scandalous ideas. Alexander McKay states that "[s]exual health education is a sensitive and sometimes controversial topic. These traditional programs slowly turned into abstinence only programs and they got away from their original concept. The contraceptive Technology Update states, "[a] ccording to a just-released study, one school district in three forbids dissemination of any positive information about contraception[. ock, 2the creator of The Healthy Student Software Collection, states, "My job is health promotion and this [the Internet] is how I can reach the most people" (qtd. Five years ago this idea started out as a student's project for the University of Alberta. Now that we, as a society, have become more sexually accepting these ideas are not so controversial and could be talked about pretty comfortably in a classroom. This generation is basically the pioneer of teaching sex in depth. " (Hubbard, Giese, and Rainey)With these six characteristics implemented into the traditional teaching of sexual education, educators can increase their success with their programs, hence increasing their sexual education in school. They should remember the school is not responsible for everything.
